<p>TC Chou is a New York-based artist, entrepreneur and interior designer with a broad range of experience from high-end residential to commercial and hospitality interiors to urban landscapes. After earning his master’s degree in advanced architecture and urban design at Columbia University, Chou worked with top interiors firms like AD100 Samuel Botero Associates before starting his own company, Design Determination, in 2012. In addition to New York, the firm has offices in Shanghai and Taipei, and works on projects worldwide.</p>
<p>One luxury residential project currently in the final stages is the Park Avenue apartment of Johnathan Rockefeller and his husband, Wilson Rockefeller. Prominent art collectors, the couple’s previous apartment was <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2016/04/10/realestate/what-i-love-jonathan-rockefeller/s/10WHATILOVE-slide-RVNS.html">featured</a> in the New York Times. <strong><u>designdetermination.com</u></strong></p>
<h4><strong> Steinway Tower, Singapore client</strong></h4>
<p>A native of Taiwan, Chou’s design prowess and fluency in Mandarin has made him a go-to for wealthy Chinese-speaking clients. One such recent project is a 55<sup>th</sup>-floor unit in the Steinway Tower at 111 West 57<sup>th</sup> owned by a Singaporean family. “It’s a really beautiful project, a lot of custom finishes,” said Chou of the space that was featured in <a href="https://adventmediagroup.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/DesignDetermination0124_asi.pdf">Architecural Digest</a>. “We were their designer since they were first in New York, about eight years ago, an apartment on Columbus Circle overlooking Central Park,” he added. The clients only used the place part-time, but now their daughter is in college in the area, so they wanted more space.</p>
<h4><strong>Hasbro Theme Park in Beijing; Mark Hopkins Hotel &amp; Posman Books</strong></h4>
<p>On the commercial side, one exciting project Design Determination has in the works is a theme park in Beijing for Hasbro, the company behind iconic brands like My Little Pony, Nerf and Power Rangers. Chou’s firm is designing a section called “Peppa Pig Ice and Snow World.” It’s indoors, so everything is below normal temperatures to create the snow and ice hill. “Most of the target audience are age 3 to 10, so it&#8217;s quite cute,” he said.</p>
<p>Chou’s team worked for over two years on an expansion of the landmarked Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco; the project was unfortunately put on hold by the pandemic.</p>
<p>Closer to home, Design Determination was tapped to reimagine the Presidential Suite at the Park Hyatt at 157 in Manhattan, and worked on Posman Books in Chelsea Market, which was named the Best Bookstore by NY Magazine in 2013.</p>
<h4><strong>Design Philosophy: Realization of Client’s Dream</strong></h4>
<p>Chou has a mastery of color and a connoisseur’s eye for art and furnishings, but, he insists, especially in residential design, he does not have a signature “look.” “The reason why is that it&#8217;s my client’s style,” he explains. Residential design is a lifestyle business, he believes. “The definition of a successful project for me is if I can bring it to a place that the client loves but never imagined they could have, then I succeeded. I think interior design is not just a realization of client want, it&#8217;s a realization of the client&#8217;s dream.”</p>
<h4><strong>Benji&#8217;s of Brooklyn</strong></h4>
<p>When the pandemic hit, Design Determination was in the middle of a large brownstone renovation which kept the company going as most other work dwindled. Chou decided he needed to find a way to keep his staff employed. During the downtime, he picked up painting and sketching again after a 10-year hiatus – his first love was fine arts, and his paintings have had numerous showings, including at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office.</p>
<p>He decided to start a greeting card business. He called a staff meeting, explained that he had enough funding for everyone to stay on the payroll, but would they work on his stationary project? “And then they started figuring out the nuts and bolts of how to put a stationary business together.”</p>
<p>Benji, his pet Goldendoodle, was his first sketch model, hence the name: Benji’s of Brooklyn. Benji’s has blossomed into a full-fledged business, with cards sold <a href="https://www.benjisofbrooklyn.com/?srsltid=AfmBOoqaUof1EkSg3jJz7f4lFtZQApy-xHgLvQxRIWlKyniiNRL4WAm9">online</a> and stocked at the Museum of Art &amp; Design store and Shakespeare &amp; Co. books. They’ve adopted technology, producing augmented reality cards, and have created an interactive AR cover for a company that obtained licensing rights for Harry Potter. <p>Chou supports various charitable organizations. After visiting their habitat, he realized that animals have many layers of emotion. “They’re just like us. We&#8217;re just human beings, they&#8217;re just animal beings. While these surface characteristics are accurate, the depth of her heart and soul, and commitment to helping others runs vast and deep. Her hope to make life better for millions of people across the globe is simply breathtaking. Her story begins with her late mother, Hope, who suffered from depression for decades. Audrey, her two sisters and her father witnessed first-hand the intense battle her mother fought throughout the years – psychic pain, misdiagnosis, trials of medications, side effects and so much more. Depression affects over 18 million adults in any given year and us the leading cause of disability worldwide. Severe depression is even rated in the same disability category as terminal stage cancer. So when her mother passed in 2005, Audrey vowed to work tirelessly towards “conquering this dreaded illness” and make finding a cure her personal mission.</p>
<h4><strong>Audrey &amp; Martin Gruss Foundation           </strong></h4>
<p>A year later Audrey established the Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF), a non-profit organization with a mission to fund pioneering international scientific research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of depression and its related mood and other emotional disorders, with the goal of finding a cure. Audrey has served as the Chairman of HDRF since its inception. She’s also the President of the Audrey and Martin Gruss Foundation, which she and her husband Martin established thirty years ago to support the cultural arts. The couple also funded the Audrey and Martin Gruss Heart and Stroke Center at Southampton Hospital.</p>
<h4><strong>Depression Task Force </strong></h4>
<p>What’s unique about HDRF’s research program is that they not only fund research, but they also created their own research group by hand-selecting several doctors who collectively work with the non-profit on strategy, development, and implementation. “We had to create our own research team because what we envisioned did not exist.  Our Depression Task Force works collaboratively – they put all their data into the Hope Data Center at the University of Michigan and that data is shared among the doctors at HDRF – the ones that do the research. That’s really a very hard thing to do,” Audrey says. “It’s as though we are created our own mini neuroscience center,” she adds. Since its start, HDRF has also awarded 104 research grants at 48 research institutions in 12 countries and 18 U.S. cities. hopefordepression.org</p>
<h4><strong>Developing an Alternative to Prozac</strong></h4>
<p>And the research is paying off. Audrey continues to explain that “the HDRF doctors are now creating a version of a new category of anti-depressant that is completely new, since Prozac was introduced 35 years ago.” This was after only eight years of the HDRF doctors being brought together in this mission.  “This is remarkable in the world of neuroscience. This usually takes decades,” adds Audrey.  She goes on to say that HDRF did not create something brand new. They found an existing drug that has not been approved in the U.S. which they made a patented version of and it’s in clinical trials at Columbia University and Mount Sinai.</p>
<p>It’s a fact that better medication to help with depression is desperately needed.  Studies today estimate that up to 35-50 percent of people suffering from depression do not positively respond to existing antidepressant medications called SSRIs, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.</p>
<h4><strong>5K Race of Hope</strong></h4>
<p>In addition to the Week of Hope, in which business round the Hamptons show their support for the fight against depression, Audrey Gruss and her organization also host a 5k Race of Hope. This year will mark their sixth annual Race of Hope to Defeat Depression in Southampton Village. Candace Bushnell, author, journalist, and the creator of the bestselling Sex and the City anthology, will attend as this year’s celebrity Grand Marshall to cheer on the race’s participants and lead them on a beautiful 5K (3.1 mile) loop around Lake Agawam in Southampton Village. The Race is open to all ages and speeds and walkers are also welcome. When he launched his own company in 1993, many of his formulas were based on the muds and minerals found in Hungarian thermal springs. Roth started the line because he’d always had skin issues. While working in his father’s jewelry factory after graduating from Wharton, he spent evenings toying with skin care formulas. “I was always going to the dermatologist. I was always getting facials; I had very active acne, so I just dived into it,” Roth says.</p>

<p>Peter Thomas Roth Clinical Skin Care produces all its anti-aging and anti-acne products using the highest-quality ingredients at its own facilities in the U.S. “I started with other people making the products, and I wasn’t getting anywhere,” Roth says. “So, we opened our own lab, manufacturing facility, and distribution center.” The brand quickly became popular at luxury spas, and the entire line has been carried at Sephora since it opened in the U.S., in 1998. The cosmetics retailer also stocks the PTR brand in Canada, Mexico, Southeast Asia, and China.</p>

A whopping 50 million users have watched her video, she’s since appeared on national television, garnered 186,000 followers, and the brand now sends her products. The company sold out of that product everywhere within hours. “It’s been trending like crazy, all from a TikTok. <p>Roth, who lives in Manhattan, is a divorced father of two sons, with whom he is very close. Both recently celebrated their graduations from the Wharton School at the same time, in 2022, since Ryan, the oldest, finished in 2020 when graduation ceremonies were halted amid the pandemic. “We went back two weeks in a row, and everyone’s officially graduated,” says the proud dad. Recently, Ryan joined his father’s company. Brendan, the younger son, has taken a job in finance.</p>

<p><strong>Philanthropy in the Hamptons</strong></p>
<p>While Mr. Roth is considered an eligible bachelor around town, he keeps a low profile on the social scene, mainly supporting charities with which he’s long been associated, including his friend Denise Rich’s Angel Ball for cancer research, and the Rita Hayworth Gala for Alzheimer’s, founded by Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, whom he met while skiing in Utah years ago. In July, he attended the Polo Classic in the Hamptons, where, in 2021 he purchased a “cute little cottage” in an idyllic setting complete with dock and jet boat. “It looks like Golden Pond; you can see the deer and rabbits.”</p>

<p><strong>Miami, Art Collector</strong></p>
<p>He also has an apartment in Miami, where his mother lives, and he’s able to spend more time there now that he’s an empty nester and remote work has become feasible.</p>
<p>In recent years Roth began collecting art. Among his acquisitions are an Andy Warhol painting of a Studio 54 VIP ticket, in all black, and another by Damien Hirst, on which the artist signed “Happy Birthday” to Roth on the back of the canvas.</p>

<p><strong>Jewelry Line</strong></p>
<p>While running his ever-growing company, Roth spent his spare time dabbling in jewelry design, just for fun. “Some people like to play golf or tennis, or play cards; I don’t, so jewelry was like my hobby,” he explains. His Ribbon &amp; Reed collection, inspired by the Metropolitan Museum of art, where he spent many youthful hours, debuted in 2016.</p>
