Founded by\u00a0<strong>Roberto Rizzo<\/strong>, the NYCIFF celebrates storytelling in all its forms, from feature filmmaking to short-story narrative, and web series to documentaries.<\/p>\n<p>Opening night featured the North American premiere of\u00a0<em>Factory Cowboys \u2013 Working with Warhol<\/em>, introduced by director\u00a0<strong>Ulli Lommel<\/strong>. Based on Lommel\u2019s 2017 biography \u201cFactory Fame \u2013 Working with Warhol,\u201d the feature film focuses on Warhol\u2019s factory life in Manhattan during the late 1970s.<\/p>\n<p><em>Veneno \u2013 The First Fall<\/em>, starring accomplished actor\u00a0<strong>Manny P\u00e9rez\u00a0<\/strong>in the role of Dominican wrestler Jack Veneno, was also screened on Monday night and ultimately went on to win Best Feature Film at the Closing Award ceremony. Director Tabare Blanchard and Roberto Rizzo moderated a Q&amp;A post-screening to discuss Veneno\u2019s impact and legacy in the Dominican Republic and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Actor\u00a0<strong>Vincent Pastore\u00a0<\/strong>was awarded the\u00a0<em>Lifetime Achievement Award<\/em>, and actress, philanthropist, and comedian\u00a0<strong>Ren\u00e9e Willett\u00a0<\/strong>was honored with\u00a0<em>The Rising Star Award<\/em>. Both Pastore\u2019s films\u00a0<em>The Kids Menu and St. Joseph\u00a0<\/em>directed by\u00a0<strong>Kathrina Miccio\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Ren\u00e9e\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>film\u00a0<em>Flight 666\u00a0<\/em>were screened on closing night.<\/p>\n<p>This year, NYCIFF introduced new award categories including web series and sci-fi, in addition to the eight category awards, which led by the jury president, R. Couri Hay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe New York City International Film Festival is dedicated to showcasing the most powerful voices in cinema, as well as nurturing up-and-coming talent, so we are thrilled that our 10<sup>th<\/sup>anniversary celebrated new mediums and emerging platforms,\u201d said Founder and Director Roberto Rizzo. \u201cWe watch the festival grow bigger and more recognizable every year and continue to look forward to providing a platform to celebrate the best talent in the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Debuting this year, New York City International Film Festival showcased filmmakers and documentarians who use their craft to explore social issues.<\/p>\n<p>Included in Best Documentary Short category was\u00a0<em>Depicting the Invisible<\/em>, which traces the creation of a portrait series by artist\u00a0<strong>Susan J. Barron\u00a0<\/strong>that depicts 15 American veterans suffering from PTSD and their inspirational stories.<\/p>\n<p>Nominated in this category was also\u00a0<em>Freedom Education Project Puget Sound: College in Women\u2019s Prison<\/em>. The documentary short focuses on the subjects of the Seattle-based nonprofit which provides a rigorous college program for incarcerated women, trans-identified and gender nonconforming people at the Washington Corrections Center for Women in Washington state<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Renowned artist<strong>, Robert Cenedella\u00a0<\/strong>introduced a special screening of his award-winning documentary,\u00a0<em>Art Bastard<\/em>, on Tuesday, February 26<sup>th<\/sup>.
