{"id":4286,"date":"2019-08-20T15:49:31","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T15:49:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/9d3e54d4b2.nxcli.net\/?p=4286"},"modified":"2026-03-13T15:39:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T15:39:07","slug":"summer-in-the-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rcourihay.com\/staging\/blog\/summer-in-the-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer In The City"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">The Met, Halston, Best TV, Pride NYC, Walk of Hope, Lincoln Center Diamond Jubilee Savanna Rooftop<\/h3>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Halston &amp; Couri<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s always scary to look at myself on the big screen; but there I was, throughout French film director Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Tcheng gorgeously shot documentary of the designer, Halston.\u00a0 The interesting part is that he used vintage footage of me interviewing Halston and his hero\/enemy and my mentor, the haute couturier Charles James, by the artist <strong>Anton Perich<\/strong> form the age of 19 to 2017. Watching myself age on camera is not my idea of a good time, but the film itself is an authentic if surface reflection of the man who I once called my lover. I\u2019ll leave the story of my teenage affair with Halston for my memoir. I saw the film at the Southampton Arts Center where<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>founding board member<strong> Simone Levinson\u00a0<\/strong>and founder of New York Fashion Week <strong>Fern Mallis<\/strong> hosted\u00a0a screening as part of their documentary series.\u00a0<em>southamptonsartcenter.org\u00a0<\/em>Director Tcheng, knows his fashion history having also made\u00a0<em>\u201cDior and I\u201d <\/em>(2004)\u00a0and <em>\u201cDiana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel<\/em>.\u201d (2011) I\u2019m trying to convince Tcheng\u00a0to do the life of\u00a0Charles James to finish this\u00a0trilogy as their lives were all so intertwined, but only time will tell. The film traces the rise and fall, via cocaine and AIDS,\u00a0of Roy Halston Frowick and his career from\u00a0farm boy to making Jackie Kennedy\u2019s iconic pink pill box hat and fashion fame to his friendships with Andy Warhol,\u00a0<strong>Liza Minnelli<\/strong> and me. If you like fashion \u2019s bigger than life characters, you\u2019ll enjoy this movie. With that said, I agree with Los Angeles Times reviewer, <strong>Kimber Myers<\/strong> \u201clike Halston\u2019s bias-cut designs, Tcheng\u2019s documentary only skims the surface of his life, but boy, does it look great doing it.\u201d Bravo!<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Handmaid\u2019s Tale\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re still trying to recover from the shocking ending of Season 2, brace yourselves.\u00a0<em>The Handmaid\u2019s Tale\u00a0<\/em>is back on Hulu<strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0Season 3 is already serving up frightening political narratives that move the story forward into a terrifying future. June Osborne\/Offred, played by the wonderful\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Moss<\/strong>, who won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in this series, and her fight for the freedom of the repressive Republic of Gilead and her two young daughters is the main focus of Season 3.\u00a0Moss confided \u201cYou have to fight with fire. That\u2019s become June\u2019s journey in Season 3. To fight against the people she has to fight, she has to become more like them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Big Little Lies<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, you\u2019re done watching HBO\u2019s bloodcurdling and depressing hit\u00a0<em>Chernobyl\u00a0<\/em>because everyone\u2019s favorite TV show <em>Big Little Lies\u00a0<\/em>is back for a Season 2. If you need a recap, head to HBO\u2019s Instagram. The premium network cleverly posted a video with everything you need to know or remember\u00a0from the first season. Based on the novel of the same name by\u00a0<strong>Liane Moriarty<\/strong>, the show stars\u00a0Oscar winning actresses <strong>Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Zo\u00eb Kravitz, <\/strong>and<strong> Laura Dern<\/strong>\u00a0fill out the stellar cast. The unmissable dark, comedic drama is still delving into lies, friendships, parenting, and marriage. <strong>Meryl Streep<\/strong> joins the cast playing Mary Louise, the mother of Perry, played by\u00a0<strong>Alexander Skarsgard<\/strong>, who was murdered during the finale of last season. On her role, Streep confessed: \u201cWe imagine that not only our children\u2019s problems but everything in the world, is our fault. I think it\u2019s sort of a more complicated landscape than that, and this piece enters into that very bravely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Met\u2019s<\/strong><strong>\u00a0Battle of the Legends<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Mother of Fashion, Met trustee and Vogue\u2019s Editor-in-Chief\u00a0<strong>Anna Wintour\u00a0<\/strong>helped host a\u00a0celebration of the exhilarating exhibition\u00a0<em>Camp: Notes on Fashion<\/em>, on view at The Met\u00a0through September 8, 2019, and in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. The hilarious highlight of The Met\u2019s Pride festivities was a competition dubbed Battle of the Legends: Vogueing at The Met.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>This Happening, staged on the museum\u2019s plaza, featured some of ballroom\u2019s fiercest competitors including\u00a0<strong>Asia Balenciaga<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Bootz Prodigy<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Omari Mizrahi<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Malik Mugler<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Tamiyah Mugler<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Ty Ebony<\/strong>. <strong>Jack Mizrahi<\/strong>, co-founder of House of Mizrahi, picked the participants.\u00a0Judges included the Iconic Queen Mother\u00a0<strong>Sinia Alaia<\/strong>;\u00a0<strong>Twiggy Gar\u00e7on<\/strong>, executive producer of\u00a0<em>Kiki<\/em>;\u00a0<strong>Our Lady J<\/strong>, producer and writer for\u00a0<em>POSE<\/em>; the Legendary Mother\u00a0<strong>Lola Mizrahi<\/strong>;\u00a0<strong>Jose Extravaganza<\/strong>, Father of the House of Xtravaganza;\u00a0<strong>Jordan Roth<\/strong>, president of Jujamcyn Theaters who sponsored the event; and a beaming Anna Wintour<em>.<\/em>\u00a0The judges kept giving out all 10s and the crowd roared for everyone, but in the end crowned Malik Mugler the \u201cLegend Slayer.\u201d This authentic, interactive experience with the public was just one of the Mets Pride events. The Met Rules!\u00a0<em>met.org<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The <\/strong><strong>Love Ball<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Susanne Bartsch<\/strong>, the iconic downtown\u00a0party giver, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) threw a fanny basher dubbed\u00a0Love Ball III at Gotham Hall with lighting by the brilliant artist\u00a0<strong>Bentley Meeker.<\/strong> The benefit blended high fashion and celebrities and highlighted\u00a0 Ballroom culture, while helping\u00a0 raise money for the CFDA- Vogue HIV\/AIDS Fund. The ball\u2019s Master of Ceremonies\u2019 was Tony and Grammy Award-winning actor\u00a0<strong>Billy Porter <\/strong>who sang his new song Love Yourself<strong>. <\/strong>Performers were judged by a group that included\u00a0<strong>Marc Jacobs<\/strong>, <strong>Char Defrancesco<\/strong>, <strong>Mary J. Blige, David &amp; Phillipe Blond,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Nicky Hilton-Rothschild, Kevin Aviance, and Dita von Teese.\u00a0<\/strong>Harlem fashion legend\u00a0<strong>Dapper Dan\u00a0<\/strong>presented the trophies to\u00a0<strong>Roger Superstar<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Orlando<\/strong>, <strong>Yasmine Petty<\/strong>,\u00a0I<strong>nvertebrate<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0Charlene<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Xtravaganze<\/strong>. In the mix were <strong>Jason Wu<\/strong>, <strong>Amanda Lepore<\/strong>, <strong>David Barton<\/strong>, <strong>Fernando Garcia<\/strong>, <strong>Christian Siriano<\/strong>, <strong>Janet Mock<\/strong>, <strong>Jonathan Adler<\/strong>, <strong>Brian Donnelly (KAWS)<\/strong>, <strong>Linda Fargo<\/strong>, <strong>Simon Doonan<\/strong>, <strong>Simon Huck<\/strong>, <strong>Stan Herman<\/strong>, <strong>Steven Klein<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Timo Weiland<\/strong>.\u00a0The\u00a0Love Ball III was made possible with the support of M\u2219A\u2219C Cosmetics, Lyft and SKYY\u00ae Vodka.\u00a0In 1989 and 1991, Susanne presented the first Balls at Roseland and\u00a0raised over $2.5 million in programs for those affected by HIV\/AIDS.\u00a0The CFDA is a not-for-profit\u00a0association founded in 1962 with 500 of America\u2019s foremost womenswear, menswear, jewelry, and accessory designers. The after party was held at the Boom Boom Room in the Standard Hotel which still remains the most glamorous night club in NYC. <em>cfda.com<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Walk of Hope &amp; Lincoln Center\u2019s Jubilee<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (LCPA) marked its 60th Anniversary with a Diamond Jubilee Gala honoring the families of Southampton\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Audrey\u00a0and\u00a0Martin Gruss<\/strong>, <strong>the\u00a0David Rockefellers<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Daisy and Paul Soros\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Laurie Tisch<\/strong>.\u00a0Audrey is the longest serving female board member at 26 years and is also the founder of The Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF), which recently honored\u00a0<strong>Anderson Cooper,<\/strong> <strong>Brooke Shields<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Ashley Judd.\u00a0<\/strong>Performers included violinist <strong>Joshua Bell<\/strong>, and <strong>Harry Connick Jr.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Chelsea Clinton<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Justin Peck\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Damian Woetzel <\/strong>were among the presenters<strong>.\u00a0<em>lincolncenter.org<\/em><\/strong> Gruss is on the move and has enlisted model <strong>Christie Brinkley<\/strong> and children <strong>Sailor Lee Brinkley-Cook<\/strong>, <strong>Alexa Ray Joel<\/strong>, and <strong>Jack Paris Brinkley <\/strong>to be the Grand Marshals of her annual 5k Walk of Hope in Southampton\u00a0on August 4<sup>th<\/sup>. This fun walk\/run is sanctioned by The USA Track and Field and always attract a glamorous crowd. Everyone is welcome and entrance fees range from $15 to $40. The event takes place rain or shine.
