Now, more than half a million people have\u00a0<a role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2021\/02\/22\/america-500-thousand-lives-lost-covid\/\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;itc:0;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link\" data-rapid_p=\"2\" data-v9y=\"1\">lost their lives to the coronavirus<\/a>\u00a0in the United States alone, leaving millions more behind to mourn their loved ones.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>The pandemic has also led to extreme job and housing insecurity, and emerging research has revealed that an influx of COVID-19 patients are\u00a0<a role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2771581\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;itc:0;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link\" data-rapid_p=\"3\" data-v9y=\"1\">dealing with chronic health issues<\/a>\u00a0after recovering from the virus. To boot, lockdowns \u2014 though necessary \u2014 essentially pressed the \u201cpause\u201d button on many special moments and major life milestones. Understandably, many people are experiencing grief caused by COVID-19.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Mental health experts say that there are different ways to process pandemic-related loss, even if you didn\u2019t lose someone you love: The first step is recognizing that there are myriad reasons someone may be grieving, and all of these reasons are valid.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"newsletter-bottom\" class=\"js-newsletter-container\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-rapid=\"marko-sec\">\n<section class=\"newsletter newsletter--initial newsletter--logged-out\">\n<div class=\"newsletter__contents\">\n<div class=\"newsletter__success\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div class=\"newsletter__success__checkmark\">\u201cGrief is a reaction to loss and not all loss is about death,\u201d said Marianne Trent, a clinical psychologist and author of \u201c<a role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodthinkingpsychology.co.uk\/\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;itc:0;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link\" data-rapid_p=\"4\" data-v9y=\"1\">The Grief Collective: Stories of Life, Loss &amp; Learning to Heal<\/a>.\u201d \u201cThere\u2019s no such thing as a grief hierarchy, grief is grief.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Seeking out a therapist can help you to work through feelings of grief. While the pandemic has highlighted the\u00a0<a role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/17\/well\/mind\/therapy-appointments-shortages-pandemic.html\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;itc:0;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link\" data-rapid_p=\"5\" data-v9y=\"1\">need for more mental health providers<\/a>, the option of\u00a0<a role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2021\/01\/trends-online-therapy\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;itc:0;cpos:10;pos:2;elm:context_link\" data-rapid_p=\"6\" data-v9y=\"1\">teletherapy<\/a>\u00a0has fortunately become more widely available. This makes grief counseling more accessible for those mourning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"public-good-placeholder\" class=\"pg-placeholder\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"pgs-dpg-btn\" data-pgs-partner-id=\"verizon-huffpost\" data-loaded=\"true\">If you\u2019re new to therapy \u2014 or even if you\u2019ve previously sought out counseling \u2014 sessions may look a little different than they did pre-coronavirus. Trent said that COVID-19 check-ins are part of every session, and \u201cpandemic grief and loss is now a feature of each client\u2019s therapeutic work either as a standalone referral, or in addition to their original presenting problems.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Victoria Goldenberg, a licensed clinical social worker who works with the\u00a0<a role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hopefordepression.org\/\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;itc:0;cpos:14;pos:1;elm:context_link\" data-rapid_p=\"7\" data-v9y=\"1\">Hope for Depression Research Foundation<\/a>, explained that processing through grief in therapy often means sitting with both the welcomed memories and feelings, as well as the uncomfortable or downright painful moments.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>\u201cIn the case of grief, there\u2019s coping and there\u2019s moving on. There has to be a level of acceptance that comes. You have to grieve. But, there needs to be time for mourning,\u201d Goldenberg said. \u201cYou can\u2019t say, \u2018OK, well that happened and it\u2019s time to move on.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"cli cli-pullquote\">\n<div class=\"cli-pullquote__placeholder\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"cli-pullquote__content\">\n<h4 class=\"cli-pullquote__quote accent-cli\">\u201cIn the case of grief, there\u2019s coping and there\u2019s moving on. There has to be a level of acceptance that comes. You have to grieve. But, there needs to be time for mourning.\u201d &#8211; VICTORIA GOLDENBERG<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>According to Goldenberg, attending an\u00a0<a role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/best-online-grief-support-groups-4842333\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;itc:0;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link\" data-rapid_p=\"8\" data-v9y=\"0\">online support group<\/a>\u00a0can be a great source of comfort and an avenue to discuss feelings of loss. Though most in-person meetings are canceled due to COVID-19 guidelines, these online peer groups can serve as a powerful reminder that you\u2019re not alone in your experiences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>What\u2019s more, you can work through grief outside of a therapeutic setting. Mental health experts agree that creative outlets can also serve as a valuable tool for processing COVID-related losses. A growing body of evidence has shown that practicing art \u2014 from painting to dance \u2014 can\u00a0<a role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/brain-research-shows-the-arts-promote-mental-health-136668\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;itc:0;cpos:13;pos:1;elm:context_link\" data-rapid_p=\"9\" data-v9y=\"0\">alleviate anxiety and depression<\/a>, and promote overall mental wellness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>\u201cExpressing your feelings is a large component of the grief process,\u201d said Lindsay Lederman, the clinical director of\u00a0<a role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/thearttherapyproject.org\/\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;itc:0;cpos:15;pos:1;elm:context_link\" data-rapid_p=\"10\" data-v9y=\"0\">The Art Therapy Project<\/a>. \u201cUsing art or other creative processes to express these thoughts and feelings, which again, often aren\u2019t simple or one-dimensional, can lessen the burden of holding on to our difficult emotions on our own.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Goldenberg has encouraged clients to paint or craft memorials in honor of loved ones that have passed. She also had clients decorate graduation caps to commemorate this rite of passage, and pick up new hobbies in the wake of serious loss as a form of healing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>The advice of practicing self-care has come to sound somewhat like a platitude, especially when the mental health toll of the pandemic can feel all too overwhelming at times. However,\u00a0<a role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/self-care-tips-big-difference-coronavirus_l_5eb57fe9c5b62d0addadd9db\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;g:79fa9bc8-5100-36cb-99e6-fb3f62cae635;itc:0;cpos:19;pos:1;elm:context_link\" data-rapid_p=\"11\" data-v9y=\"0\">identifying restorative, simple and small activities<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 such as journaling or adopting healthy bedtime habits \u2014 can help you begin to build a strong self-care routine that keeps you grounded while mourning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"cli cli-pullquote\">\n<div class=\"cli-pullquote__placeholder\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"cli-pullquote__content\">\n<h4 class=\"cli-pullquote__quote accent-cli\">\u201cWe are all just doing our best to get through each day with the resources we have.\u201d &#8211; MARIANNE TRENT<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>As Lederman explained, grief can often leave you in \u201cautopilot mode,\u201d but \u201ctaking the time to sit, feel your feelings and do something you need for yourself is a small thing you can do to support the grief process.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Studies have\u00a0<a role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/five-fallacies-of-grief\/\" data-ylk=\"subsec:paragraph;itc:0;cpos:19;pos:1;elm:context_link\" data-rapid_p=\"12\" data-v9y=\"1\">debunked the popular idea<\/a> that someone will neatly go through the five stages of grief, which are denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. In reality, there is no timestamp on mourning, or the feelings associated with loss. As Trent further explained, \u201cGrief is not a linear process and people may move backwards and forwards, into and out of the stages across minutes, months and years.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Mourning is complex, at times messy and exhausting. Continuing to navigate living an ongoing pandemic while dealing with grief related to the pandemic can complicate feelings of loss even further. Identifying what works for you as you process loss and mourn will be a process within itself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cGive yourself permission to treat yourself compassionately,\u201d Trent said. \u201cWe are all just doing our best to get through each day with the resources we have.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You don&#8217;t have to be mourning a loved one to need help coping.
