Samra G. Brouk, a freshman Democrat from Rochester, would\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2021\/S2584\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tie New York\u2019s health curriculum\u00a0<\/a>to standards written by a left-wing interest group that advocates \u201cSex Ed for Social Change\u201d \u2014 and would make those lessons mandatory statewide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Under that group\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/siecus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/NSES-2020-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">current standards<\/a>, public and charter schools would have to teach 5-year-olds about \u201cgender identity\u201d and instruct 8-year-olds on hormone blockers to prevent puberty in transgender-identifying preteens.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Kids as young as 11 would get lectures on \u201cvaginal, oral, and anal sex\u201d; study \u201cqueer, two-spirit, asexual, pansexual\u201d and other gender identities; and receive explicit instruction on the use of external and internal condoms, dental dams and other contraceptives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Brouk told The Post, \u201cI am greatly concerned about the unacceptably high incidence of relationship violence, sexual harassment and assault, and online bullying in our society today. That\u2019s BS.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even parents who approve of sex ed in school are queasy about the envelope-pushing topics the law would require.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s inappropriate,\u201d said Ken Jewell, a Manhattan family law attorney whose two children attend New York City public elementary schools. \u201cThese are things kids that age are not capable of comprehending yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Jewell favors early-grade instruction on personal space and pedophilia protection, but think\u2019s Brouk\u2019s measure \u201cgoes too far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a dad I want my kid armed enough to know if something is wrong,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I don\u2019t want to put knowledge in their heads that takes away the innocence of childhood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A recent study by Montclair State University professors\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2020\/12\/14\/experts-sex-education-should-begin-in-kindergarten\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boosted early sex education<\/a>\u00a0as a way of preventing child sex abuse and, later, partner violence.<\/p>\n<p>Parents like Ken Jewell think the new law would go too far.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cI am in love with the SEICUS standards,\u201d declared child psychologist Dr. Kelly Rabenstein Donohoe. \u201cThey discuss all aspects of human sexual development and relationships, and promote better communication about uncomfortable topics. This knowledge both protects kids and prepares them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rcourihay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ken-jewell.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rcourihay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ken-jewell.jpg 640w, https:\/\/rcourihay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ken-jewell-200x300.jpg 200w\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>New York is one of 22 states that lacks a statewide sex-ed requirement. State law leaves the topic to local school districts to decide \u2014 other than HIV\/AIDS instruction, which is required for grades K-12 using lesson plans \u201cconsistent with community values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In New York City public schools, that means lower-grade instruction on viruses and the immune system, with no mention of sexual contact until fourth grade.
