ARTIST DAVID SALLE EXHIBITS EARLY WORK AT WATER MILL’S PARRISH ART MUSEUM<\/a><\/h3>\n

Artist David Salle mounts an exhibition of early work alongside pieces by his friends of 40 years Eric Fischl and Ross Bleckner at the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill.<\/strong><\/p>\n

David Salle, Ross Bleckner, and Eric Fischl met in the early 1970s as students at the California Institute of the Arts. Later, they all established careers as influential painters in New York at a time when painting was considered to be pass\u00e9 as an artistic medium. \u201cI was doing what one does,\u201d says Salle of his post-college years. \u201cYou want to be a painter, you come to New York, and once you\u2019re in New York, you somehow, if you\u2019re lucky, eventually find your way out to the Hamptons.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not only did these three come of age in the art world at the same time, they\u2019ve also lived parallel lives in a way. And now, the Parrish Art Museum is presenting their work in a unified exhibition, \u201cUnfinished Business: Paintings from the 1970s and 1980s by Ross Bleckner, Eric Fischl and David Salle,\u201d opening July 31. \u201cThe idea of competition doesn\u2019t exist in the same way that it might in some other arena,\u201d says Salle of himself, Bleckner, and Fischl. \u201cWe\u2019re not competing for the same role. We\u2019re not competing for the same job. Everyone is really quite singular and distinct, and our work is quite distinct.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet, in many ways, there has been much similarity. The three have ended up living on the same street more than once. \u201cRoss was on White Street early on, and completely coincidentally, I was able to get a building on the other end of White Street in the early \u201980s,\u201d Salle recalls, adding that Tribeca was a mecca for artists at the time.<\/p>\n

Later on, in the 1990s, again completely by coincidence, both Salle and Bleckner owned homes on Daniels Lane in Sagaponack. \u201cIt was just one of those funny things,\u201d says Salle, who suggests that it\u2019s due to their singular personalities that they\u2019ve remained friends all this time. \u201cRoss and Eric are very witty, very funny, humorous people, but in very different and complementary ways,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s a sense of humor and sense of amusement\u2014or bemusement\u2014that underlies these last 40-some years, which I think speaks to the qualities, the personalities, of these men.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
