The object \u2014 from the artist\u2019s 1980s apartment at\u00a0325 Broome St. downtown \u2014 features more than 80 signatures and \u201ctags,\u201d including those believed to be by Madonna and Jean-Michel Basquiat.<\/p>\n<p>Even more amazing, the artifact nearly perished before the current owner \u2014 who lived in Haring\u2019s old unit in the early 1990s \u2014 grabbed it from a back alley before a garbage crew could take it away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a one in a million kind of thing,\u201d Guernsey\u2019s president Arlan Ettinger told The Post. (Ettinger said that the piece is being sold \u201cwithout minimum reserve,\u201d meaning it will go for whatever the highest bid is.)<\/p>\n<p>Haring often had raucous get-togethers at his Soho apartment, and his artistic guests left their marks on every surface of his home, from the brightly painted walls to the front door to his white icebox.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe tagged everything,\u201d artist Cy Adams told The Post, recalling the crowded, celeb-filled parties Haring would throw at his apartment. \u201cWhen you\u2019re a young graffiti artist, you don\u2019t even think twice about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rcourihay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/keith-haring-3.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rcourihay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/keith-haring-3.jpg 683w, https:\/\/rcourihay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/keith-haring-3-200x300.jpg 200w\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"959\" \/><figcaption>Keith Haring refrigerator, auctioned on May 12, 2021 by Guernsey\u2019s.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Haring moved out of the Broome Street apartment shortly before he died of AIDS in 1990. That\u2019s when the fridge\u2019s current owner, an artist who now lives in San Francisco and wished to remain anonymous, moved in.<\/p>\n<p>She answered found a listing looking for a roommate to share a railroad apartment in Soho for $250 a month. \u201cI was immediately struck by the beautiful light in the front of the flat and the amazing bathroom \u2026 [and] the funky kitchen with the fridge covered in graffiti,\u201d the woman told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>When her soon-to-be roommate informed her that the apartment had once belonged to Haring, \u201cI was stunned,\u201d she said. After she moved in, she and her friends would examine it for names they recognizes. She ended up keeping it even after moving out in 1993.<\/p>\n<p>Three decades later, she\u2019s decided it\u2019s time to part with the curiosity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope to pass this fridge on to someone, or some institution, who, like me, has a connection and appreciation for the power of everyday art. On the left side, he drew a big black blob splashed with some stars and arrows, while on the upper right-hand corner he stuck a sticker featuring his iconic \u201cradiant baby\u201d image, which he first began drawing in subway stations in 1980. Haring called that figure \u2014 of a crawling baby with lines emanating from its body \u2014 \u201cthe purest and most positive experience of human existence.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Madonna<\/h4>\n<p>Madonna met Keith Haring when she was a struggling artist in the Lower East Side, and sometimes crashed on his couch when she couldn\u2019t make her own rent. Later the Material Girl would wear the artist\u2019s graffiti-inspired fashions on stage and in music videos, and the two stayed friends for life. It\u2019s presumed she is the one who scrawled \u201cMadonna Loves Keith\u201d on the fridge. Freddy (birth name: Fred Brathwaite) started out painting subway cars and was one of the first street artists, along with Haring, Basquiat and Futura, to infiltrate the fine-art world.<\/p>\n<h4>Futura 2000<\/h4>\n<p>Leonard Hilton McGurr \u2014 aka Futura 2000, aka Futura \u2014 also began as a subway scribbler, developing a highly stylized, almost abstract script that set him apart from other taggers. The two exhibited and partied together and inspired and pushed one another. In 1988, after Basquiat died tragically at 27 from a heroin overdose, Haring painted \u201cA Pile of Crowns for Jean-Michel Basquiat,\u201d featuring his friend\u2019s signature crown motif.<\/p>\n<h4>Rock Steady Crew<\/h4>\n<p>The Rock Steady Crew popularized break-dancing in the early 1980s, thanks to troupe member Richard Col\u00f3n \u2014 dubbed \u201cCrazy Legs\u201d for his acrobatic feats. The teenage \u201cb-boy\u201d from the Bronx soon became downtown fixture after his moves made him famous, getting into the groove at hot spots like Danceteria with Haring, Madonna and their crew. (LA stands for \u201cLittle Angel.\u201d) At age 13 he met Haring, and the two quickly began collaborating, with Ortiz filling in the spaces of Haring\u2019s line drawings with his own dense squiggles. \u201cWe just immediately hit it off,\u201d Haring said of their friendship. \u201cIt\u2019s as if we\u2019d known each other all our lives.
